Our Mission

The Book Revue is a nonprofit organization established to support a vibrant, place-based arts culture in designated Communities of Opportunity (COOs) in West Seattle and Burien. We engage the community primarily through in-person workshops featuring local guest artists. Our lives are “already artful,” as Toni Morrison writes, and by gathering together to cultivate artfulness, we can uncover and express the beauty, meaning, and sense of solidarity that our lives already contain.

Located in Highland Park, The Book Revue provides free and accessible public arts programming at neighborhood venues, serving communities with limited access to the arts. We strive to work in unity with area cultural organizations and complement their existing offerings. Our work affirms the diversity of the communities we serve and prioritizes the development of communal, intercultural, and inter-generational relationships.

The Book Revue was incorporated as a nonprofit in 2025, when we began holding our premier in-person program—a customizable, monthly art offering called 12 Tales. Each month of the year, 12 Tales generates a fresh art activity and delivers it to the community in multiple locations.

The nonprofit’s Call for Creatives Initiative will kick off in 2026, building a roster of local emerging artists and creatives. As 12 Tales Guest Artists, the creatives will receive payment to lead 12 Tales program offerings and support in developing their public profile.

Various equity analysis matrices used by Seattle public agencies have identified our area as one with many underserved populations. We recognize the collective responsibilities and social justice demands that come with these designations; our programming prioritizes the creation of platforms for local artists and communities to express our interests, identities, and aspirations. As well as our humor, memories, dreams and stories.

Our Philosophy

We believe that people of all ages thrive through meaningful engagement with literature and the arts, both as creators and observers. Creativity can happen in a two-hour workshop, a five-minute art booth, or even in the fleeting, magical moments of everyday life—and who knows where else.

Our Programs

The BOOK Revue offers four unique programs that bring reading and art to life through creativity and collaboration. Each program can be customized to fit the interests, schedule, and goals of participants. We look forward to partnering with the many organizations serving our area to create an enriching experience that meets their needs.
